Acapulco was the first significant resort in Mexico. Overlooking the Pacific, it has been popular with wealthy Mexicans since the 1920s. It became the playground for Hollywood's jet set by the 1950s, and the world's first major resort to rely solely on visitors arriving by air.
Acapulco was formerly a favorite destination of Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack, and it was also where Elizabeth Taylor married Mike Todd (the third of her eight marriages) and John and Jacqueline Kennedy went on their honeymoon (as did a young Bill and Hillary Clinton). The Acapulco Princess Hotel was where Howard Hughes spent his final days. Lana Turner and John Wayne both had a spot overlooking the water.
